1394 Demo

Due to the fact that the notebook (Gateway Solo 9300) has only one 1394 port and does not provide power over the cable, a powered 6 port repeater was connected to the notebook. To the repeater was connected the VST HDD and Vcam desktop camera. Both were powered over the 1394 cables coming from the repeater. Three videos and audio were shipped from the HDD at the same time over one 1394 cable to the repeater. A fourth video from the Vcam was also sent to the repeater. All four videos where then shipped from the repeater to the notebook over one 1394 cable. This demonstrated the bandwidth of 400 Megabits. One of the videos on the VST HDD was a home video shot with a Sony 1394 camcorder and editing with one of the standard 1394 non-linear video editing systems currently available in retail from several vendors. Not only was the superior DV video quality apparent (when compared to the other two videos playing off the HDD which were captured from TV) but the ability to add title slides and profession scene transitions were also shown. The ability to take home videos and edit them on the PC is one of the major drivers of 1394 into the PC market. Non-linear video editing has become the latest "fun" thing for people to do with their home PCs (Courtesy of Mr. James Snider)
